The plot of the film revolves around Baadshah Khan (Amitabh Bachchan), an Afghani Pathan who falls in love with Benazir (Sridevi), the queen of a rival clan. Benazir agrees to marry him only on one condition - he has to bring back the head of her father's killer, Habibullah (Bharat Kapoor), from India. Baadshah Khan succeeds in his mission, but is arrested by the Indian police for killing Habibullah. He is sentenced to 25 years in prison, but escapes with the help of his friend Khuda Baksh (Danny Denzongpa). He returns to Afghanistan to find that Benazir has been kidnapped by Habibullah's brother Pasha (Kiran Kumar), who wants to marry her. Baadshah Khan rescues Benazir and kills Pasha, but is wounded in the process. He asks Benazir to take care of their daughter Mehandi (also played by Sridevi) and leaves for India to surrender himself to the police. Meanwhile, Mehandi grows up to be a brave and beautiful girl who is trained by Khuda Baksh. She travels to India to find her father and meets Inspector Raja Mirza (Nagarjuna), who falls in love with her. She also meets Henna (Shilpa Shirodkar), Habibullah's daughter who is unaware of her father's crimes. Mehandi and Henna become friends and join forces to free Baadshah Khan from prison. The film ends with a happy reunion of Baadshah Khan, Benazir, Mehandi and Raja Mirza.
